Emerald Downs Picks & Predictions — August 16, 2026

12 racesAll Emerald Downs picks

Emerald Downs is putting on a show today. Twelve races, five of them stakes, and a partly cloudy afternoon sitting right at 74°F — conditions that should keep the dirt track playing honest and fast. This is one of the bigger cards of the Pacific Northwest meet, and the racing shapes up as a genuine test from start to finish.

Whether you're here to cash a few win bets or build a multi-race sequence, today's card has something for everyone. The opener gets things rolling in claiming company, and by the time we hit Race 6 the stakes action kicks in and doesn't let up through Race 11 — five straight stakes races in a row. That's a rare opportunity to chain together some high-quality handicapping.

Our TrackWiz models ran every runner on the card, and there are some strong opinions baked in — including a longshot angle in the stakes ranks that you won't want to miss.

Best Bets

Race 1

Claiming · 6 fur · Dirt

The morning line underestimates the top-rated horse in this 6-furlong dirt claimer — TrackWiz numbers point to a clear class edge hiding at 7/2.

win5Maximum SparkleML 7/2

Maximum Sparkle (#5) carries the field's highest TrackWiz rating at 86.35 — a significant gap over the second-ranked Miss Union at 65.75. That kind of separation in a claiming opener is hard to ignore, and trainer Tom Wenzel sends her out with Adrian Castellanos aboard, a reliable pairing at this level. The 7/2 morning line looks like a gift if the rating edge translates to the dirt at six furlongs. A 20% career win rate is modest, but the raw figure here suggests she's simply better than this field.

place2Miss UnionML 5/2

Miss Union (#2) is the morning line favorite at 5/2 and backs it up with a solid 65.75 rating and a 28% career win mark — respectable for this level. Trainer Debbie Peery also saddles Sharp Ride in this race, which speaks to her stable's confidence in the field, and Kevin Krigger is a capable pilot. If Maximum Sparkle has any trouble, Miss Union is the most logical runner-up.

show1Miss DynamicML 3/1

Miss Dynamic (#1) at 3/1 checks in with a 61.5 TrackWiz rating and a standout 40% career win percentage — the best win rate in the field. Blake Nunnally gets the call for trainer Rigoberto Velasquez, and that experience factor matters in a race where pace could get messy up front. She's worth including in exacta and trifecta tickets as a hedge against an upset.

Race 2

Claiming · 6 fur · Dirt

A tight pace scenario shapes up in this 6-furlong dirt claimer, but one horse's TrackWiz rating towers over the chalk — and the morning line disagrees.

win5Adios NicanorML 5/2

Adios Nicanor (#5) owns the field's top rating at 87.81 and goes to the gate at 5/2, which at least gives you some value on a horse our analysis strongly favors. Trainer Scott Tubbs puts Alex M. Cruz up, and the numbers here represent a clear edge over the field — the next-closest horse, Taino House, sits 9 points back. In a six-horse claimer at six furlongs, pace tends to sort itself out quickly, and Adios Nicanor looks best equipped to handle whatever scenario develops.

place1Taino HouseML 9/5

Taino House (#1) is the betting favorite at 9/5 with a 78.83 rating, and Kevin Krigger is one of the sharpest riders at this meet. A 23% career win rate is workable in a spot like this, and trainer Charles Essex keeps him competitive. If Adios Nicanor takes care of business up front, Taino House profiles as the most likely to be picking up the pieces.

show4ElevadoML 5/1

Elevado (#4) is the sleeper in the exotics at 5/1. His 74.67 rating ranks third in the field, and trainer Michael Robert Morris has him positioned to fire a big one here. A 13% career win rate looks slim, but the speed figure and distance profile suggest he's been in tougher company — a potential class relief angle worth noting when building trifecta combinations.

Race 3

Claiming · 1 mi 70 yd · Dirt

One horse separates himself from the pack on both ratings and pedigree in this one-mile-and-seventy-yard dirt claimer — the question is whether the pace sets up for a front-runner or a closer.

win5Pistol PowerML 2/1

Pistol Power (#5) is the standout in this field, posting an 88.54 TrackWiz rating — the highest in the race by a comfortable margin — and a 29% career win rate that ranks among the top marks here. Blake Nunnally takes the mount for trainer Rigoberto Velasquez, and it's worth noting Velasquez also enters Hey Sequoia, suggesting the stable has a real presence in this race. At the 2/1 morning line, Pistol Power is fairly priced, but the rating gap is substantial enough that he's the clear top selection going a route distance on dirt.

place2Light the BeamML 5/2

Light the Beam (#2) is the second choice on the morning line at 5/2 and backs it up with a 76.68 rating and a career win percentage of 24%. Trainer Tim McCanna puts Kevin Krigger up — one of the best rider-trainer combinations available at this meet — and going long at a mile and seventy yards should suit a horse that the ratings suggest has staying power. Solid place contender in an otherwise thin field.

show7Bourbon DancerML 4/1

Bourbon Dancer (#7) at 4/1 is the third-highest rated horse in the race at 74.49 and brings a 14% career win rate that, given the field quality, still profiles as competitive. Kevin E. Orozco handles the riding duties for trainer Valentin Garcia, and at a route distance where the pace may stretch the field out, a closer like Bourbon Dancer can sneak into the trifecta at a price worth playing.

The first three races are on the house. We're opening with Maximum Sparkle (Race 1, 7/2 morning line) going six furlongs in a dirt claiming sprint — a solid rating of 86.35 from our models, and a price that should offer real value if the morning line holds. Race 2 brings another six-furlong dirt sprinter in Adios Nicanor at 5/2, the top-rated horse in that field at 87.81. When your best-rated horse in a claiming sprint also comes in near the top of the morning line, that's a straightforward case to make.

Race 3 stretches out to a mile and 70 yards, and Pistol Power (2/1) earns our highest free-race rating at 88.54. Two-to-one is shorter than we'd love, but the number justifies the price — this one looks like a genuine key horse for exacta and trifecta coverage early in the card. Collectively, the free card sets a pace-heavy, sprint-focused tone for the early going, so keep an eye on how the rail is playing through those first few races before you dive deeper into the card.
