Charles Town Picks & Predictions — October 17, 2026

8 racesAll Charles Town picks

It's a cool Saturday night at Charles Town — 48 degrees, skies clear, and the dirt should be playing fast under the lights. Eight races are on the board, and conditions look ideal for speed horses to get out and run.

October nights at Charles Town have a rhythm to them, and tonight's card has some real intrigue. We've got a mix of maiden specials, allowance spots, and claiming races across distances ranging from the sharp 4½-furlong sprints to a pair of 7-furlong routes. The pace scenarios vary wildly from race to race, which is exactly where sharp handicapping separates winners from losers.

Three races are open to everyone tonight — and our TrackWiz analysis surfaced some strong numbers in those free spots. The remaining five races are available to subscribers, and there's a longshot angle in Race 4 that could make your night in a hurry.

Best Bets

Race 1

Maiden Special Weight · 4 1/2 fur · Dirt

A short 4.5-furlong maiden sprint where two horses show actual speed figures and four are first-time question marks — the morning line tells you something, but our ratings tell a slightly different story.

win1GoldeckML 8/5

Goldeck tops our TrackWiz ratings at 71.35 — a clear edge in a field where four rivals have no recorded speed figures at all. At 8/5 on the morning line, the market agrees, but our numbers suggest the favorite tag is warranted. Trainer Stephen Murdock puts Reshawn Latchman aboard, a rider who knows how to handle sprint distances at Charles Town. In a race this thin on data, the horse with the most quantifiable form holds a real structural advantage.

place4IfthedevildancedML 6/1

Ifthedevildanced rates second-best on our sheet at 65.93, posting the same average speed figure as Goldeck but drawing the 4-hole at a generous 6/1. Trainer William R. Lewis, Jr. sends out Nomar Arroyo Bueno, one of the more reliable sticks in this circuit, which adds confidence. At that price, this one is an obvious inclusion in exacta combinations.

show2Thunder PassML 15/1

Thunder Pass is a value flier here at 15/1 on the morning line with a TrackWiz rating of 60.43 — third in the field despite zero speed figure data, which at least suggests some quiet workouts that caught our model's attention. Trainer Joseph P. Stehr and jockey Maximo Chilo are a live combination in maiden sprints. If the top two lock up on the lead, Thunder Pass could be picking up pieces late.

Race 2

Allowance · 7 fur · Dirt

The public will back the 7/5 morning-line favorite, but our top-rated horse is sitting off the pace at 7/2 — this allowance sprint sets up as a potential value race over seven furlongs.

win4Miss Nine One OML 7/2

Miss Nine One O rates highest on our TrackWiz sheet at 78.28, edging out the morning-line favorite despite going off at 7/2. She brings a 5% career win rate, but in allowance company at this level, it's the quality of recent figures that matters — and she shows an average speed of 52. Trainer James Dean Locklear gives her to Nomar Arroyo Bueno, one of the meet's sharper jockeys, and over seven furlongs there's room for a stalker to settle and pounce.

place1Zero DegreesML 3/1

Zero Degrees checks in second on our ratings at 76.31 and sports a 10% career win rate — the best in the field — at a fair 3/1 price. Trainer Joseph Pyke's horse has the figures to be competitive, and Jose Y. Diaz has been getting the job done in this circuit. He profiles as the type who could set or stalk the pace and still have enough gas to hold place honors.

show5Fake StrollingML 12/1

Fake Strolling at 12/1 is the show-pick value play here, rating 73.96 on our model — that's third-best in the field while going off as the fifth choice. A 16% career win rate matches Can You See Me Now's, but Fake Strolling's TrackWiz number is nearly 33 points higher. Trainer Analia R. Gomez's runner deserves serious exotic consideration at that morning-line price.

Race 3

Maiden Claiming · 4 1/2 fur · Dirt

A maiden claimer at 4.5 furlongs that splits cleanly into two tiers — Rock n'Opportunity and Miracle Lad sit well above the rest of the field on our ratings, with a significant drop-off to the third group.

win2Rock n'OpportunityML 9/5

Rock n'Opportunity owns the highest TrackWiz rating in this race at an eye-catching 88.83 — nearly nine points clear of the second-best horse. Trainer Ronney W. Brown sends out Nomar Arroyo Bueno, the kind of jockey-trainer combo you want to be on in a sprint. The horse posts an average speed figure of 52 in a field where several rivals have none, and at 9/5 the morning line reflects the deserved favoritism. This is the most dominant ratings edge on the card through the first three races.

place6Miracle LadML 7/2

Miracle Lad rates second at 79.85 and is priced at a comfortable 7/2, making him the clear place pick to back alongside the favorite. Jose Y. Diaz gives trainer David Walters a strong rider for a short sprint, and Miracle Lad's average speed of 51 is backed by actual recorded figures — an advantage over more than half this field. He looks like the most logical exacta wheel underneath.

show7Shook Me All NightML 8/1

Shook Me All Night at 8/1 is our show pick with a 55.79 rating — meaningfully ahead of the four horses bunched below him — and Sunday Diaz, Jr. is a capable hand for trainer Lawrence E. Perry, Jr. in a short sprint. This is a speculative inclusion for those building trifecta tickets rather than a strong stand-alone play, but the price more than compensates for the risk.

The first three races set an interesting tone. Goldeck opens the card in a Maiden Special Weight sprint at 4½ furlongs — an 8/5 morning line chalk with a TrackWiz rating of 71.35. In Race 2, the card steps up to a 7-furlong allowance and Miss Nine One O at 7/2 catches our eye — that's a price worth respecting given her rating of 78.28. Race 3 is where the early-card money is: Rock n'Opportunity packs an 88.83 TrackWiz rating into a maiden claiming sprint and goes off at only 9/5, suggesting the morning line makers already know what we know.

On a cold, clear night like this, early pace figures to be honest in the short sprints — no headwind or wet track to slow the fractions. That plays into horses who want to roll forward and put rivals away quickly. Keep that bias in mind as you watch the first few races unfold, because what you see early will tell you a lot about how the surface is playing for the back half of the card.
