Albuquerque Picks & Predictions — October 16, 2026
Friday racing at Albuquerque looks like a genuinely sharp day to be at the windows. Nine races spread across the dirt, ranging from tight 330-yard sprints to the longer 870-yard routes — the kind of mixed card that rewards handicappers who know how to shift gears between formats.
Conditions couldn't be much better: clear skies, 60°F, and a fast dirt surface that should keep times honest and give well-rated horses a fair shot to show their class. No weather excuses today — if your horse is good enough, it'll show.
The card opens with three free-preview races to get you started, then deepens into six premium races where the real meat of the card lives. Let's break it down.
Best Bets
Race 1
Maiden Claiming · 350 yd · Dirt
A wide-open maiden claiming sprint at 350 yards where TrackWiz ratings separate the field sharply — two horses grade out well clear of the rest, making the top of the ticket fairly defined even in a maiden scramble.
T Bar Grand Leona draws the top TrackWiz rating in the field at 86.35 — more than 11 points clear of the next rival, Lethal Intent — and that margin in a maiden field this deep is meaningful. Luis A. Valenzuela picks up the mount, and in a 350-yard dash where the gate is everything, having a capable hand up matters. At 7/2 on the morning line, this is a horse that grades out as the class of the field while offering a touch of value. In maidens with no prior win percentages to sort, lean hard on the top-rated horse.
Lethal Intent sits second in the TrackWiz ratings at 75.51 and comes in at a competitive 3/1 morning line with Oscar Andrade, Jr. in the irons — one of the more active riders on this card. The gap between Lethal Intent and the third-rated horse (Cyber Prince at 54.17) is substantial, suggesting this horse has a legitimate profile to hit the board even if the top pick fires. Good place-ticket anchor in a maiden field.
Cyber Prince rates third in the field at 54.17 and draws a reasonable 9/2 morning line, which aligns with his profile as a contender for a piece of the purse. Jose Luis Enriquez takes the mount, and with a full 12-horse field creating traffic in a short 350-yard burst, closers and wide runners can get shuffled — Cyber Prince's rating suggests enough ability to hold show position. Worth including in any exotic vertical in this race.
Race 2
Claiming · 870 yd · Dirt
The 870-yard claiming route shapes up as a two-horse battle at the top of the ratings, but Ghost Dreams and Onenite Ofmischief both carry double-digit win percentages that could complicate the exotics picture.
Rock N Roll Gp tops this field with a TrackWiz rating of 87.08 — the highest mark in a field that includes some horses with legitimate career form — and carries a 16% career win rate to support it. Oscar Andrade, Jr. rides for trainer Jorge Luis Sanchez, Jr., a pairing that appears twice on today's card. At 870 yards, pace and stamina come into play more than in the sprints, and Rock N Roll Gp's rating suggests he has the overall profile to handle the distance. At 3/1, the price is fair for the top-rated horse.
Big Eye posts an 82.19 TrackWiz rating — second-best in the field — and carries a 9% career win percentage at 5/2 on the morning line with Gabriel Medrano up. That rating gap between him and the third horse (Onenite Ofmischief at 65.26) is significant, and at the 870-yard distance there's plenty of race to set up a strong finishing effort. Big Eye looks like the most reliable place horse on the board here.
Onenite Ofmischief logs a 14% career win rate and is the only horse in this field with a recorded average speed figure (55), which at least gives us something concrete to anchor. Luis A. Valenzuela picks up the mount at 7/2, and in a longer route at 870 yards, experience showing up in the gate can be decisive. A logical third-place finisher with some exotic upside if the pace sets up kindly.
Race 3
Claiming · 400 yd · Dirt
Total Lunar Eclipse towers over this 400-yard claiming field on the ratings, but Kings Moon Money and Sampson Says both flash strong career win percentages that keep the exotics honest.
Total Lunar Eclipse carries the field's top TrackWiz rating at 87.08 — a full 13 points ahead of the next horse — and posts a 10% career win rate at a fair 3/1 morning line. Daniel Antonio Torres gets the mount, and at 400 yards for a claiming field, having the top-rated horse in a relatively short sprint is a significant edge. The class angle here is clear: when one horse grades out this far above the field, they're worth backing at any reasonable price. Our top selection without hesitation.
Kings Moon Money rates second in this field at 74.03 and brings a strong 20% career win percentage to post — among the best strike rates in today's race. Jacob Enriquez rides for trainer Joel Iturralde, who also saddles Fireball Ar in Race 2, showing active barn form. At 5/2, this horse might actually be underlaid given his win percentage, but the place ticket offers a safer angle on a legitimate contender.
Sampson Says carries the best career win percentage in this field at 21% and draws post one with Alonso Rivera at 7/2. That win rate stands out in a claiming field, suggesting a horse that has found the winner's circle regularly at this level. His TrackWiz rating of 50.35 is a step below the top two, but at show odds he's a solid exotic inclusion, especially in a field that could see traffic in the early going.
Our first three races give you a solid foundation to build on. Rock N Roll Gp (Race 2, morning line 3/1) and Total Lunar Eclipse (Race 3, morning line 3/1) both carry TrackWiz ratings of 87.08 — the highest marks on the entire card — and both line up at comfortable prices that suggest real value if they hit the board. These aren't chalk laydowns; they're horses our analysis genuinely likes at fair odds.
T Bar Grand Leona kicks things off in the Race 1 maiden claimer at 7/2. On a fast, honest track like today's, pace in the short 350-yard dash is everything — horses that break sharp and don't waste a step tend to dominate these sprints. Keep an eye on how the early races play out; if you spot a consistent gate-to-wire pattern developing, file that away for the back half of the card.
