Albuquerque Picks & Predictions — October 4, 2026
It's a beautiful Sunday at Albuquerque — clear skies, 73 degrees, and a dirt track that should be playing fast all afternoon. Nine races are on the card today, mixing quarter-horse sprints in the short stuff with a pair of longer routes that will test pace and stamina. Conditions couldn't be more cooperative for a full day at the windows.
The card spans everything from short maiden sprints at 350 yards all the way out to a 1 1/16-mile Claiming Stakes, so there's something for every kind of bettor today — whether you're a speed-figure junkie hunting overlay prices in the sprints or a trip-handicapping purist waiting for the routes. The headliner is Race 8, a one-mile Stakes with Marka drawing plenty of early attention at 3/1 on the morning line.
TrackWiz analysis has three free races up front to get you started, with the full nine-race breakdown available for subscribers. Let's get into it.
Best Bets
Race 1
Maiden · 350 yd · Dirt
A wide-open maiden sprint at 350 yards with first-time starters across the board — TrackWiz ratings create a clear top tier, but raw maidens can always surprise at this distance.
Silky Gray Silk tops our TrackWiz ratings at 86.35 and draws the rail in a field where gate speed is everything at 350 yards. The combination of James A. Flores in the irons and trainer Victor H. Rodriguez-Flores suggests a well-prepared debut — connections clearly know each other's rhythms. In a field this green, the horse with the highest rating and a confident trainer-jockey partnership is exactly where we want to be.
McKinlay rates a very close second in our model at 84.90, just a tick behind the top pick, and draws post 6 — workable in a sprint this short. Trainer Wesley T. Giles sends this one out at 9/2 on the morning line, representing solid value for a horse this close to the top of the ratings. In maiden sprints, the second-best rated horse often hits the board, making McKinlay a natural place play.
My Lady in Lights checks in third on our TrackWiz ratings at 77.96 and is actually the morning-line favorite at 3/1, suggesting the public and the connections are high on this one. Trainer Bernadette Barrios sends her out with Francisco Zamora, a capable hand around this oval. At those odds, the show value may be thin, but she belongs in any exotic ticket given her rating edge over the rest of the field.
Race 2
Claiming · 400 yd · Dirt
A 12-horse claiming sprint at 400 yards with an unusually wide spread in TrackWiz ratings — the top horse separates from the field, but a couple of mid-packers have the career win percentages to make things interesting.
Jlb the Red Eye owns the field's top TrackWiz rating at 87.08 and backs it up with a 25% career win rate — that's a horse who knows how to finish in front. Oscar Andrade, Jr. takes the call, and he's one of the busiest riders on this card, which suggests he's getting the good horses. At 3/1 on the morning line, this isn't a value play so much as a solid, confident win bet on a horse who simply looks like the best here.
Eyem Out of Here rates second in our model at 75.10 and brings a 14% career win rate — respectable for this claiming level. The 9/2 morning line with Luis A. Valenzuela up gives this one a quiet professional look, and trainer Joel J. Gonzales places horses well. A horse rated this much higher than the majority of the field at a price is exactly the kind of place bet that adds up over a long season.
Tellin Sweet Nothins is the intrigue horse here — a 50% career win rate is eye-popping for any level of horse racing, and it stands out dramatically in this field. The TrackWiz rating of 55.83 may not be elite, but a horse that wins half its career starts clearly knows how to compete. Trainer Manuel Rodolfo Rodriguez may be dropping this one into a spot it can handle, and 7/2 on the morning line reflects the public's awareness of that win rate.
Race 3
Allowance · 400 yd · Dirt
An allowance sprint at 400 yards where two horses — Honey Bunny and Cq Coyame Jessy — separate clearly from the pack in our ratings, setting up a likely top-two battle at the wire.
Honey Bunny posts the field's best TrackWiz rating at 84.90 and brings an 18% career win rate into an allowance that looks very manageable. Oscar Andrade, Jr. is up for trainer Leovigildo Hernandez, Jr., and Andrade is clearly the go-to rider on this card tonight — he's been handed multiple top-rated horses. At 9/2 on the morning line, there's a bit of value here given the rating edge over everyone else in the field.
Cq Coyame Jessy is the horse to beat for the place spot, carrying a solid 79.69 TrackWiz rating and an impressive 28% career win rate. Francisco Zamora has a nice connection with trainer Lauren McQueen, and this filly has clearly been competitive at this level. At 7/2 on the morning line, she's priced fairly — if Honey Bunny gets loose on the front end, Cq Coyame Jessy looks like the most likely to be right there at the finish.
Da Edge of Gray is the morning-line favorite at 5/2 — the public clearly respects this one — and a 35% career win rate is the highest in the field. The TrackWiz rating of 69.06 puts it third in our model, but that win rate says the horse competes hard and finds the winner's circle more often than most. In a race with two horses we like better, Da Edge of Gray is a solid show backup and a key piece of any exacta or trifecta structure.
The first three races on today's card are fully unlocked for all readers, and they cover a nice cross-section of the day's action. We open with a 350-yard maiden sprint in Race 1, where Silky Gray Silk (7/2 ML, TrackWiz rating 86.35) stands out as our top play. Race 2 is a 400-yard claimer — the bread-and-butter distance of quarter-horse racing — and Jlb the Red Eye draws our top nod at 3/1, carrying the highest rating of the free trio at 87.08. Race 3 steps up in class to allowance company over the same 400-yard strip, where Honey Bunny at 9/2 represents a solid value angle against a field that may be short on proven form.
A common thread across these three: on a clear, dry day with the track likely playing true, horses that break cleanly and show early foot at these ultra-short distances carry a major edge. Watch the gate times in Race 1 — they'll tell you a lot about how the surface is responding and give you a feel for the rest of the afternoon.
