Louisiana Downs Picks & Predictions — July 3, 2026
Happy almost-Fourth, horseplayers. Louisiana Downs is rolling out a seven-race card on July 3rd, and Mother Nature is already making her presence known — rain is falling at post time with temps sitting around 90°F. That's a sticky Louisiana summer combo, and it's going to matter today, especially on the turf.
Three of today's seven races are contested on the grass, and with moisture in the ground, we're watching closely for any turf-to-dirt switches and how course management calls the going. Wet turf at Louisiana Downs can play very differently horse to horse — some love it, some want no part of it. Our ratings factor that in, and it's one of the bigger X-factors shaping today's card.
The card leans claiming, with a pair of allowance spots — including a juicy 7½-furlong turf allowance in Race 5 — breaking things up nicely. We've got three free previews for everyone and four premium deep-dives locked in for subscribers. Let's get into it.
Best Bets
Race 1
Claiming · 7 1/2 fur · Turf
A turf claiming opener where the morning line favorite gets outrated by two rivals — the top of the TrackWiz sheet separates from the field, but the middle tier is bunched close enough to make exactas interesting.
Clearly Bella tops our ratings at 87.08 — the highest mark in the field — and trainer Shane Wilson puts her on a surface where that edge should matter. At 3/1 on the morning line, she's not being dismissed by the morning line maker either, suggesting the book agrees there's real form here. Her 12% career win rate is modest, but on turf at this distance, the rating separation over the rest of the field is the story. Alexander Castillo gets the call, and this jockey-trainer combo is worth noting as Wilson also saddles Back Street Baby, giving the barn a strong double-barrel shot in the opener.
Back Street Baby draws the morning line favoritism at 2/1 and backs it up with an 83.60 TrackWiz rating — second best in the field. Her average speed figure of 54 leads all seven starters, which matters at 7.5 furlongs on the lawn where late kick often comes down to raw ability. The 8% career win rate looks unimpressive on the surface, but claiming turf fields have a way of cycling through near-misses, and that speed edge makes her a near-certainty for the exacta frame.
Classic Embrace rates third in the field at 79.58 and gets a fair shot at 5/2 on the morning line, suggesting she's well-regarded despite a modest 8% career win rate. Trainer Al Cates keeps her competitive in this spot, and with the top two horses rated tightly, any pace pressure up front opens the door for her to collect a piece. She's the hedge in your exotics — box her underneath Clearly Bella and Back Street Baby in the trifecta.
Race 2
Claiming · 1 mi 70 yd · Dirt
The morning line points to Picasso Baby as a heavy favorite, but our ratings flip the script entirely — this dirt route has a legit upset brewing at the top of the TrackWiz sheet.
Wise Verdict is our top-rated horse at 85.62 despite being posted at 4/1 on the morning line — a significant disconnect worth exploiting. Trainer Jonas Gibson also sends out Purrrfect Rhythm, giving the barn two bullets in a wide-open field, and Fernando Jara aboard is a capable pilot for a route distance. A 20% career win rate is genuinely strong for a claiming horse and backs up the idea that this horse knows how to finish the job — especially going a mile and 70 yards where fitness and class tend to separate horses.
Sir Mack rates second on our sheet at 83.76 and carries a 25% career win rate that commands respect — one in four times this horse hits the winner's circle, which is elite for this level. Trainer Denise Schmidt has him sitting at 5/1 on the morning line, meaning the market is giving you some price on a horse with genuine credentials. In a route where pace scenarios can get messy, a horse with proven closing ability and a strong win percentage is exactly what you want underneath in your exactas.
Purrrfect Rhythm checks in at a 78.76 rating and comes from the Jonas Gibson barn — the same trainer sending out our top pick Wise Verdict. That stable double is a real angle in claiming routes, as trainers who fire two horses often have a plan for both. At 9/2, she's a fair price for a show slot and rounds out what looks like a strong top-three for this field.
Race 3
Claiming · 1 mi · Turf
Eight horses line up on the turf at a mile, and the top of the TrackWiz ratings is genuinely competitive — four horses rate within four points of each other, making this one of the trickier cards of the day.
Rebel Moon tops the TrackWiz sheet at 84.46 and gets Emanuel Nieves in the irons — a capable rider who should handle the mile turf trip without issue. At 4/1 on the morning line, the morning line maker is in rough agreement that he's a contender, but our ratings suggest he may actually be undervalued relative to some of the prices in this field. A 10% career win rate in turf claiming company isn't eye-popping, but the rating edge over the bottom half of this field is meaningful, and trainer Al Cates has the horse ready to run.
Friday Night Fever comes in at an 82.71 TrackWiz rating and is priced at 6/1 on the morning line — that gap between our rating (second tier) and his price (mid-longshot territory) is exactly the kind of overlay we look for in exotic plays. Carlos Lozada takes the mount, and with a 7% career win rate, this horse hits the board more than he wins, which makes him ideal for place and show bets. If Rebel Moon gets caught up in any pace trouble, Friday Night Fever has the rating to pounce.
Blue Chair Bay sits just behind the top duo at an 81.42 rating and draws the rail post under Alexander Castillo for the Shane Wilson barn. That Wilson-Castillo combination is one of the more active on the Louisiana Downs circuit today, and a 11% career win rate on a horse rated this highly in a turf claiming mile suggests he hits the board regularly. At 7/2, he's not giving you much price, but as a show play or trifecta piece, he's a reliable anchor.
Our free previews cover the first three races, and it's a solid opener to the card. Clearly Bella (Race 1, 3/1 morning line) tops our ratings at 87.08 and draws us in immediately — a 7½-furlong turf claiming sprint that could get tactical with the wet ground in play. In Race 2, Wise Verdict (4/1) takes our top spot in a route on dirt, where the rain should actually help by packing the surface and rewarding horses that can handle a bit of give. And in Race 3, Rebel Moon (4/1) headlines the one-mile turf claiming event — one to watch closely if the course is playing to closers, which rain-softened grass often does.
The common thread across these three free picks? All three are priced between 3/1 and 4/1 on the morning line, meaning we're not chasing chalk — there's genuine value to be had if our ratings hold up. Keep an eye on any late surface changes or jockey switches before you finalize your tickets.
