Lethbridge RMTC Picks & Predictions — May 31, 2026
It's a grey, soggy Sunday at Lethbridge RMTC — rain is falling and temperatures are sitting at 46°F, which means we're almost certainly looking at an off track by first post. That changes everything: pace dynamics shift, ground-saving trips become more valuable, and horses with proven form on wet dirt move way up the board.
We've got a 7-race card to work through today, mixing maiden sprints, allowance company, and a Starter Optional Claiming event to close things out. The distances range from a quick 5 furlongs all the way out to 7, so there's plenty of different pace scenarios to untangle before you finalize your tickets.
Three races are fully unlocked for all TrackWiz readers — Races 1, 2, and 3 — with our top picks and analysis available right now. Races 4 through 7 are part of the full premium card breakdown, available to subscribers.
Best Bets
Race 1
Maiden · 5 fur · Dirt
A wide-open maiden sprint where the morning line tells two very different stories — the chalk and the public choice don't match, and TrackWiz ratings point to a clear top selection well above the rest of the field.
Italian Griz comes in with a TrackWiz rating of 89.71 — that's a massive gap over the second-best horse in this field and the kind of separation that's hard to ignore in a maiden sprint. Trainer Lyle W. Magnuson sends this one out with an average speed figure of 52, which is actual timed work to point to while most rivals have zeros next to their names. At 6/5 on the morning line, the public respects the profile here, and our analysis says that respect is warranted. Jockey Larris Allen gets the call and should have options in a compact 5-furlong dash.
Ramblin Riggs drew the rail and figures to get a clean trip for jockey Ryan Nelson, who will want to establish position early in this short sprint. The morning line has this one as the 3/5 favorite — shorter than our top-rated horse — but the TrackWiz rating of 68.68 places Ramblin Riggs second in the field, making a place finish a reasonable expectation. No speed figure to lean on, but the connections clearly believe in this one given the odds.
Little Patriot at 6/1 morning line is the sleeper worth tossing into your exotics here. The TrackWiz rating of 58.63 grades out third in the field, and Gilberto Santos picks up the mount — a competent pilot who can make the most of a pace scenario that could get chaotic if the heavy favorites tangle up front. A show ticket here at probable overlay odds is a smart hedge in a wide-open maiden event.
Race 2
Maiden · 5 1/2 fur · Dirt
Force of Fire looks like a standout in this maiden event but faces a field where three horses have actual speed figures on record — making the pace scenario worth watching over this added furlong of 5½.
Force of Fire carries a dominant TrackWiz rating of 89.12 in a field where no other horse comes within 30 points, which is about as clean a separation as you'll find in a maiden race. Trainer Colten Mead — who also has Judges Empire in this race — clearly has the upper hand, and Gilberto Santos gets the mount on the barn's top horse. The average speed figure of 51 shows actual racecourse ability, and the 8/5 morning line reflects how seriously this stable is taking this runner.
Judges Empire is the second string from the Colten Mead barn, and in maiden races that trainer angle — having the barn's top two horses — can mean connections know something. The TrackWiz rating of 58.92 is the second best in the field, and at 5/1 on the morning line, Garfield Gordon can rate this one just off the pace and look for a run late. A place ticket here makes sense as insurance behind the heavy hitter.
Holmdel Hornet has an average speed figure of 52 on record, which puts this one among the few with actual performance data in a largely unknown field. Trainer Kaylon Calfrobe saddles this one at 3/1 on the morning line — respectable odds for a horse that Andre Powell can place prominently in an early pace that may not be overly contested. Including the Hornet in your show exotics gives you a proven measure of ability at a reasonable price.
Race 3
Allowance · 6 fur · Dirt
A tighter allowance field than it looks — the top two TrackWiz-rated horses are separated by just under six points, and a genuine pace duel between two well-matched rivals could set things up for a closer.
Zone Control sits at the top of TrackWiz's ratings with an 88.83 and brings a career win percentage of 18% into this allowance sprint — solid numbers for a horse at this level. The average speed figure of 54 is the joint-best in the field and matches up well for 6 furlongs on dirt. Trainer Kaylon Calfrobe gets Trevor Simpson in the irons, and at 9/5 on the morning line, this horse profiles as a legitimate top selection without being egregiously short. The combination of consistent speed and a respectable win rate makes Zone Control the play.
Suddenly Famous is right there on the numbers — an 83.04 TrackWiz rating, an average speed of 54, and a career win percentage of 22% that actually edges Zone Control in that department. Juan Apango takes the mount for trainer Krista A. Shearer at 3/1, which represents some value relative to the raw talent on display here. If the pace gets hot early, Suddenly Famous has the profile of a closer who can pick up pieces and absolutely lands in the place spot.
Poncholightsout is an interesting inclusion at 8/5 on the morning line — that price suggests significant public support, yet the TrackWiz rating of 66.62 grades this one third. Trainer Chandra Clarke puts Andre Powell up, and the career win rate of 17% tells you this horse has been around the winner's circle. At a crowded price, sticking Poncholightsout in your show spot gives you coverage on a well-supported runner that doesn't quite match the top two on our metrics.
The free portion of today's card kicks off with back-to-back maiden sprints before stepping up into allowance territory — and on a track playing wet, speed figures alone won't tell the whole story. Our top pick in Race 1, Italian Griz (morning line 6/5, TrackWiz rating 89.71), leads the way as our highest-rated selection on the card. In Race 2, Force of Fire (8/5 ML, 89.12) draws our attention in a slightly longer 5½-furlong maiden dash, where early pace could dissolve quickly in the slop. Then in Race 3, Zone Control (9/5 ML, 88.83) gets a shot to shine in a 6-furlong allowance where today's off-track conditions could really shuffle the deck.
The through-line across all three free races: horses that can rate just off a contested pace and finish through the going are going to have a major edge today. Don't blindly follow speed — look for closers with wet-track breeding or form on an off surface. The TrackWiz ratings already bake in our off-track adjustments, so lean on those numbers.
