Evangeline Picks & Predictions — June 5, 2026

9 racesEvangeline

We're headed to Evangeline Downs for a nine-race Friday card, and the conditions are about as cooperative as Louisiana gets in early June — cloudy skies and 85°F mean the heat is there but the sun isn't beating straight down on the strip. That's the kind of afternoon where horses who've been shipping in from hotter, harder climates can show up fresh.

Today's card is a nice mix of claiming races to open things up, a pair of turf routes that could get interesting if any moisture has lingered in the ground, and a couple of allowance tests later in the afternoon where the real talent on the grounds gets sorted out. Nine races, two surfaces, and TrackWiz analysis on every single one of them.

Three races are free for all readers — Races 1, 2, and 3 — and the remaining six are available to subscribers. Let's break down what you need to know before the first post.

Best Bets

Race 1

Claiming · 7 fur · Dirt

The morning line favorite isn't the top-rated horse here — TrackWiz numbers point to a 10-1 overlay at the top, making this a wide-open 7-furlong dirt claimer with real betting angles throughout the field.

win4JayjayjayML 10/1

Jayjayjay tops our ratings at 76.88 and draws the 4-post in a field where speed should play well over the Evangeline dirt. The 12% career win rate is the best among the top contenders, and trainer Justin Jeansonne puts him in at 10-1 on the morning line — that's a number that looks too generous if our figures hold up. Jockey Harry Hernandez gets the call, and with an avgSpeed of 53 matching the field's upper tier, Jayjayjay projects as the most dangerous runner in here.

place2Parole DramaML 5/2

Parole Drama carries the morning line favoritism at 5/2 and backs it up with a 67.36 TrackWiz rating — second-best in the field. The 53 avg speed ties the top cluster, and trainer Chasey Deville Pomier has him in with Isaac Castillo up. Even if Jayjayjay beats him, this one's too solid at the price to leave off your tickets.

show7SeizethedaydudeML 5/1

Seizethedaydude is the most accomplished horse in this field by win percentage — 20% career wins is genuinely impressive and stands out in a claiming group where most runners are in single digits. Trainer David Terre sends him out at 5/1 with Colby J. Hernandez, and his 59.04 rating gives him a legit shot at the exacta or better. Use him underneath in your multi-race plays.

Race 2

Claiming · 6 fur · Dirt

A sharp top two dominate the TrackWiz ratings by a wide margin here, but Rancho's eye-popping 50% career win rate makes this 6-furlong dirt claimer more interesting than the morning line suggests.

win2Jamesy's EmpireML 2/1

Jamesy's Empire leads our ratings at 88.54 — a full four points clear of the next horse — and checks in at 2/1 on the morning line, which is short but defensible. A 22% career win rate is strong for the claiming ranks, and trainer Brett A. Brinkman has him well-spotted with Julio Ramirez Jr. in the saddle. The 52 avgSpeed in a field that trends 50-55 puts him right in the pace mix at 6 furlongs.

place6Donegal DreamerML 5/2

Donegal Dreamer rates second in the field at 84.47 and goes at 5/2 — trainer Dane Noel and jockey Jamison Mudd make for a reliable combination at Evangeline. His 53 avgSpeed edges Jamesy's Empire slightly on that metric, and the 8% career win rate suggests he runs big in spots without always closing the deal — exactly the profile you want for a place bet.

show3RanchoML 4/1

Rancho is the sleeper angle in this field. A 50% career win rate is jaw-dropping for this level, and the 55 avgSpeed is the highest in the race by two ticks — that's raw ability showing through. Trainer Juan Munoz Cano spots him at 4/1, and with Carlos Perez up, he's a legitimate win threat who covers your show bet almost automatically.

Race 3

Claiming · 6 fur · Dirt

Three horses are separated by less than two and a half points at the top of the TrackWiz ratings — this 6-furlong dirt claimer is about as tight a tri as you'll find all card.

win1Tough Love TorresML 2/1

Tough Love Torres leads the field at 88.54 and carries a 37% career win rate — that's elite numbers for the claiming level and the kind of résumé that holds up when things get tight. Trainer Antonio Alberto sends him out as the 2/1 morning line choice with Harry Hernandez, and the 54 avgSpeed is tied for best in the field. When you've got the top rating AND the top win percentage, you run him on top.

place3TakeittothehouseML 3/1

Takeittothehouse slots in at 86.45 — just two ticks below the co-leader — and his 3/1 morning line makes him the play underneath. Trainer Eduardo Ramirez has him sharp, and Javier Antonio Hernandez is a capable hand at this level. The 53 avgSpeed is a touch off the top pair, but in a race this tight, any pace scenario can shuffle the order — Takeittothehouse should be right there at the wire.

show2Yuma's ShadowML 5/2

Yuma's Shadow rates at 86.22, and this is legitimately a three-way photo at the top. Trainer Jonathan Wong sends him out at 5/2 with Isaac Castillo — both are dependable pieces of the puzzle. His 23% career win rate actually tops Tough Love Torres' field companions, and the 54 avgSpeed ties for race-best. In an exacta or trifecta, you could honestly flip the order of these top three and not be wrong.

The early card gives us a lot to work with on the dirt sprint side. Races 1, 2, and 3 are all dirt, all six or seven furlongs, and all claiming events — which means pace scenario is everything. In these shorter dirt claimers at Evangeline, early speed tends to hold better than at bigger ovals, so we're paying close attention to who's breaking from a clean post and who's likely to be first to the turn. Jayjayjay opens the card as a double-digit morning-line price in Race 1, and our rating of 76.88 suggests there's real upside if the pace sets up right — that's the kind of number that can look very different by race time. Jamesy's Empire in Race 2 and Tough Love Torres in Race 3 both carry identical ratings of 88.54 and are both posted at 2/1 on the morning line, making them the two most straightforward plays of the free portion of the card.

The through-line connecting these three picks is pace and position — all three project as horses who want to be involved early on a track that typically rewards that style. If you're building a small early Pick 3 ticket, these three races are your foundation.
