Evangeline Picks & Predictions — June 4, 2026

8 racesEvangeline

It's a wet one at Evangeline Downs today. Rain is falling across the Lafayette corridor and sitting at 81°F, the humidity is doing that classic Louisiana thing where the air feels like a warm, damp towel. The dirt strip is going to be a factor all afternoon — keep an eye on how early track condition reports evolve as post time approaches.

Eight races are on the slate, and the card has a little bit of everything: maiden specials, claiming battles, a pair of allowance tests, and some sprint action down the lane. The turf races (Race 1 and Race 5) are worth watching closely — if the rail is soft and the going gets heavy, pace scenarios can flip in a hurry on grass.

Three races are open to everyone today. The full eight-race breakdown, including our premium deep-dives, is available to TrackWiz subscribers.

Best Bets

Race 1

Maiden Special Weight · 1 mi · Turf

A wide-open maiden special weight on the turf at a mile, where two horses rate a full 10+ points above the rest of the field — but neither is a heavy favorite, so value is alive throughout the card.

win3Musical BandML 9/2

Musical Band tops our TrackWiz rating at 84.9 — the highest of any horse we're leaning on in this race — and goes postward at a very playable 9/2 on the morning line with Harry Hernandez in the irons for trainer Shane Wilson. The mile on turf is a test of stamina and ground-saving trips, and Musical Band's profile suggests she handles the extra ground well. With an average speed figure of 53 in a maiden field where most competitors clock in at 51-52, even a modest improvement puts her in an elite position. At morning-line odds that don't reflect her rating edge, she offers genuine win value in what could be a fast-changing market.

place11Lil CentralML 5/2

Lil Central (No. 11) grades out almost identically to the top pick at a TrackWiz rating of 83.49 and is the morning-line favorite at 5/2 under Colby J. Hernandez for trainer Sam B. David, Jr. Her role here is likely as a pace-pressing type who gets a clean trip from the outside post — if Musical Band gets into any trouble on the turf course, Lil Central is perfectly positioned to steal the place honors. She's a solid anchor for exacta combinations.

show2UninspiredML 12/1

Uninspired (No. 2) is easy to overlook at 12/1 on the morning line, but a TrackWiz rating of 72.8 is legitimately the third-best number in this field. Trainer Juan A. Larrosa sends her out with Carlos Perez aboard, and her average speed figure of 52 matches most of the mid-tier horses here. In a maiden race where upsets are common and the tote board can surprise, she's a worthwhile show wheel and an interesting exotic piece.

Race 2

Claiming · 5 fur · Dirt

The morning-line favorite doesn't own the best TrackWiz number in this 5-furlong dirt claimer — that distinction belongs to No. 4 Pasketee, who should be a short-priced winner but brings a legitimately standout profile to a competitive sprint.

win4PasketeeML 7/2

Pasketee is the class of this field according to our TrackWiz ratings at 86.35 — well ahead of the next-best horse — and his 22% career win rate is the highest in the field, essentially double what most of his rivals bring to the gate. Trainer Benard Chatters sends him out with Julio Ramirez, Jr. in the irons, a sharp combination at this level. At 5 furlongs on the dirt, speed figures and class tend to sort things out quickly, and Pasketee's average speed of 54 ties several rivals but his overall profile projects to a clear edge. Morning line of 7/2 feels fair, and he should be a confident top selection.

place9Final HalfML 5/2

Final Half (No. 9) holds the second-best TrackWiz rating in the race at 69.48 and lands at 5/2 on the morning line — making him the public's second choice as well. Trainer Brett A. Brinkman sends him out with C.J. McMahon up, and a 12% career win rate is respectable in a claiming sprint. His average speed figure of 54 matches the best in the field, and he figures to be running at the end if a pace duel develops up front.

show1Running RaggedML 6/1

Running Ragged (No. 1) at 6/1 holds a 66.88 TrackWiz rating — third in the field — and a 11% career win rate that's right in line with the competitive core of this race. Trainer Chadwick J. Mouton sends him out with Isaac Castillo, and breaking from the rail in a 5-furlong sprint is rarely ideal, but a clean getaway could have him forwardly placed. He's a solid show bet and an important piece in any exacta or trifecta construction.

Race 3

Claiming · 6 fur · Dirt

A full, contentious field of 11 in a 6-furlong dirt claimer, with the top TrackWiz-rated horse sitting at a reachable 7/2 and two credible mid-price runners lurking underneath — pace will be a factor with multiple speed horses drawn wide.

win4Big NickelML 7/2

Big Nickel (No. 4) carries the top TrackWiz rating of 86.35 in a deep claiming field and gets a strong tactical draw with Colby J. Hernandez named to ride for trainer Sturges J. Ducoing. His average speed figure of 54 is at the top of the field, and while his career win rate of 13% isn't flashy, it's competitive at this level. At 7/2 on the morning line, he represents a rare combination of top rating and fair price — exactly the kind of win bet we like anchoring trifectas with.

place10Game PortML 9/2

Game Port (No. 10) checks in with a strong 77.68 TrackWiz rating and a 20% career win rate — one of the better winning percentages in the field. Juan P. Vargas handles the riding duties for trainer Juan A. Larrosa, and at 9/2 on the morning line, there's a bit of value attached to a horse who figures to be competitive on class. His average speed of 53 is solid for this company, and he's the type who can sit just off a fast pace and pounce in the stretch of a 6-furlong sprint.

show7ScallywagML 10/1

Scallywag (No. 7) is an interesting show play at 10/1 morning line with a TrackWiz rating of 74.75 — legitimately the third-best number in the race. Trainer Juan Munoz Cano also has Rhum Saint Esprit in the race, but Scallywag's profile under Carlos Perez offers a little more pop in the figures. A 10% career win rate is modest, but in a show spot we're really looking for a horse who hits the board more than he wins, and his rating strongly suggests he belongs.

Our three free best bets span a turf route opener and a pair of dirt sprints — a nice cross-section of the card's early shape. Musical Band leads the way in Race 1 at 9/2 on the morning line, an interesting price for a horse our ratings have at 84.9 in a maiden special weight mile on the grass. Wet weather doesn't always kill turf races at Evangeline, but it's worth tracking the surface status before you fire.

On the dirt side, Pasketee (Race 2) and Big Nickel (Race 3) both carry identical TrackWiz ratings of 86.35 — the highest-rated free picks on the card — and both go at 7/2 on the morning line. Two similarly-rated horses at identical morning-line prices in back-to-back sprints is the kind of parallel worth noting. If the sealed dirt plays fast and favors early speed, both of these runners could wire their fields.
