Emerald Downs Picks & Predictions — July 17, 2026
Clear skies, 74 degrees, and a fast Emerald Downs dirt strip — conditions couldn't be much friendlier for a Friday afternoon at the track. Seven races are on the board today, all contested on dirt, with distances ranging from a sharp 5½-furlong sprint in Race 5 all the way out to a one-mile route in Race 4. That kind of variety makes for a fun card to handicap, whether you're a speed-figure junkie or a pace analyst.
The field quality is solid throughout, with a mix of maiden claimers and open claimers that should produce competitive finishes top to bottom. With the track playing fast under ideal weather, early speed will be worth monitoring — but don't sleep on closers if the pace heats up in the sprint races. Today's card has a little something for every style of bettor.
Best Bets
Race 1
Maiden Claiming · 6 fur · Dirt
A maiden claimer with a massive ratings gap at the top — Girl At Home towers over this field and looks like a wire-to-wire candidate on paper, but these first-time or lightly-raced maidens can always surprise.
Girl At Home is the class of this field by a wide margin, posting a TrackWiz rating of 90 — more than 33 points clear of the second-best horse. The morning line has her at even money, which tells you the oddsmakers see what we see. Kevin Krigger gets the call for trainer Debbie Peery, a solid combination at this level. With an average speed figure of 56 — best in the race — she has the raw numbers to control this from the front and never look back.
Our Hula Girl checks in as the third-highest rated runner at 56.67 with an average speed of 55, right in the mix behind the top two. Adrian Castellanos has been active at Emerald Downs and gives trainer Tom Wenzel a live weapon from the rail-adjacent 5-hole. At 3/1 on the morning line, she's a fair price to at least hit the board if Girl At Home does her thing up front.
Simply Smiles sits at 56.17 on our ratings — nearly identical to Our Hula Girl — making her a legitimate threat to land in the exacta or trifecta. Alex M. Cruz is up for trainer Dan L. Markle from post 6, and at 6/1 on the morning line, she offers some overlay value in the exotics. Use her underneath in trifecta tickets to keep costs reasonable.
Race 2
Claiming · 6 fur · Dirt
Baby Waylon dominates this claiming field on both ratings and career win percentage, but Spectacular Tiger's superior average speed figure gives him a puncher's chance if pace sets things up right.
Baby Waylon is the standout here — a TrackWiz rating of 88.54 and a career win rate of 33% is elite for this level. Trainer Francisco Rodriguez puts Alex M. Cruz in the irons, and this horse has clearly shown the ability to win on a consistent basis. At 2/1 on the morning line, he's not giving away much overlay, but a horse winning nearly one in three starts deserves to be favored. He's the right bet here.
Spectacular Tiger draws the 4-hole and brings the best average speed figure in the race at 57 — a number worth noting in a sprint. Trainer Steve C. Fisher and jockey Frank T. Alvarado combine on a horse with a solid 27% career win rate. If Spectacular Tiger gets a clean trip and a mild pace, that extra tick of raw speed could let him run down anyone who ties up late.
Tougherthantherest is no throwaway at 22% career wins and a 54.23 TrackWiz rating. Blake Nunnally takes the mount for Blaine D. Wright, a trainer who knows how to place horses in favorable spots. At 5/2, he's actually the second choice on the morning line and represents solid show security — something to anchor the bottom of your trifecta.
Race 3
Claiming · 6 1/2 fur · Dirt
This 6.5-furlong claiming sprint looks like a three-way battle at the top, with Tiz Grazen, Bad Sneakers, and Keep It Coming all rated within striking distance — pace and post position could break the tie.
Tiz Grazen earns top TrackWiz honors in this field at 86.35 despite going off at a juicy 7/2 morning line. Trainer Jorge Rosales puts Adrian Castellanos up, a jockey who knows how to rate a horse over the Emerald Downs dirt. The 18% career win rate is modest, but the ratings edge over the rest of this field is significant enough to make Tiz Grazen a confident top selection at a price.
Bad Sneakers brings the most experienced winning profile in this field — a 20% career win rate that outpaces everyone else in the starting gate. Alex V. Anaya gets the call for trainer Joe Toye, and with a TrackWiz rating of 73.06, this horse is sitting just off the top of the class hierarchy. The 5/2 morning line makes him the co-second choice, and he's the kind of solid closer who can sweep up if the pace heats up.
Keep It Coming is right on Bad Sneakers' heels at 71.98 on our rating scale, essentially dead even on paper. Blake Nunnally rides for trainer Ian Jewell, and at 4/1 there's a touch of value here for a horse that belongs in the conversation. In a race where the top three are this tightly bunched, including Keep It Coming in your exotics is just smart coverage.
TrackWiz is opening up the first three races for all readers today, and there's genuine value to dig into. Girl At Home draws plenty of attention in Race 1 — even-money morning lines don't always scare us off when the TrackWiz rating backs it up at 90, the highest mark on the entire card. In Race 2, Baby Waylon comes in at 2/1 with an 88.54 rating and looks like a solid win-single candidate in a 6-furlong claiming sprint. Race 3 stretches out a half-furlong to 6½, and Tiz Grazen at 7/2 is our top play there — that morning line suggests some underlay risk, but the rating at 86.35 gives us confidence there's real ability here.
One theme tying these free picks together: all three top selections are in short-to-mid sprint territory on a surface that should reward horses with tactical early position today. If the bias develops the way we expect under these conditions, getting to the front — or sitting just off a hot pace — will be the name of the game. Watch the first couple of races closely for pace clues before putting together your tickets for the rest of the card.
