Delta Downs Picks & Predictions — July 16, 2026
It's a warm Thursday afternoon at Delta Downs — partly cloudy skies, 89 degrees, and a dirt track that figures to play lightning fast all card long. Eight races are on the docket, every one of them a short-course sprint on the dirt. If you love quarter-horse-style speed duels and rapid-fire action, this is your kind of card.
The heat won't slow these horses down — if anything, conditions like this tend to produce some of the quicker times you'll see all meet. With the track firming up under the Louisiana summer sun, early speed figures should hold up and gate sharpness becomes premium currency today.
We've broken down all eight races for you. The first three are fully open — no subscription needed — and the final five are available to TrackWiz premium subscribers. Let's get into it.
Best Bets
Race 1
Maiden Claiming · 350 yd · Dirt
A wide-open maiden claiming sprint at 350 yards where TrackWiz ratings reveal a clear standout at the top but plenty of chaos lurking in the middle of the pack.
Ancient Bolt of Fire draws the #2 hole and carries a TrackWiz rating of 83.35 — that's a significant gap above the rest of this field, where the next-best runners cluster in the mid-50s. Trainer Miguel Hernandez puts Rey O. Hernandez in the irons, a pairing worth noting in a maiden event where connections matter. At 5/1 on the morning line, this horse offers real value given the rating advantage, and the 350-yard distance suits a pure speed profile. In a race where nobody has a career win to their name, raw talent metrics are our best guide — and Ancient Bolt of Fire tops those charts convincingly.
One Fast Macho (7) draws a 3/1 morning line, which reflects public respect, but the TrackWiz rating of 56.67 puts him squarely in a tier of horses fighting for the minor awards. Trainer Jose U. Lopez and jockey Leonardo Rodriguez are a workmanlike combo, and at this short distance there's little margin for a slow start — if One Fast Macho breaks clean, he's got enough to hold a placing spot.
Special Innocence lands at 56.53 in our ratings — nearly identical to One Fast Macho — making her a legitimate exotic play at 6/1. Rolando Cabrera handles the mount for trainer Gilberto Rosales, and in a field this competitive in the middle tier, price and rating alignment make her a solid show inclusion in exactas and trifectas.
Race 2
Allowance · 870 yd · Dirt
This 870-yard allowance features a dominant ratings leader and a well-backed second choice, setting up a potential two-horse battle with a handful of live bombs lurking underneath.
Blue Castle (#5) is the clear top selection here with a TrackWiz rating of 85.62 — the highest in the field by a comfortable margin. Trainer Trey Ellis sends out a horse with a 12% career win rate, and Bobby Ransom takes the call in what should be a strong rider-trainer partnership at this distance. At 4/1 on the morning line, there's genuine overlay potential given how far ahead of the competition Blue Castle grades out on our model.
Buckle Up Blue (#8) is the morning-line favorite at 2/1 and rates second on our board with a 78.2 score. A 17% career win rate is respectable, and Ubaldo Luna is a capable rider who will have this horse in good position through the longer 870-yard trip. The short price limits the upside, but the rating backs up the chalk — place tickets here are safe money.
Sarahsfreighttrain (#1) checks in at 60.03 on the TrackWiz scale and carries an 18% career win rate — the second-highest win percentage in the field. Trainer Phillip Calais Jr. teams with Arturo Alvarez, and at 5/1 there's show value in a horse with a proven ability to hit the board. She won't outrun the top two on current ratings, but she's a legitimate trifecta anchor.
Race 3
Maiden Claiming · 300 yd · Dirt
A maiden claiming dash at 300 yards where one horse separates itself from the rest of the field on ratings — the question is whether the price holds up at the windows.
Rogue Effort (#7) posts a TrackWiz rating of 87.81, which is not only the top mark in this race but one of the higher figures on the card today. Trainer Jorge G. Lopez puts Francisco Giles in the saddle — Giles is one of the more active riders at Delta Downs and gives this horse a confident look. At 5/2 on the morning line, the morning-line makers clearly agree, but even at that price the rating gap over the field is wide enough to make this a strong win play.
Rp Eagle Kisses (#8) rates at 55.83 and goes off at 7/2 — a fair price for a horse that separates from the pack below Rogue Effort. Trainer Jorge E. Rubio deploys Rolando Cabrera, and at 300 yards every tenth of a second counts, so breaking cleanly will be the key. If Rogue Effort has any stumble at the gate, Eagle Kisses is positioned to take the spoils.
Fly My Freight (#9) draws a 52.49 rating and a 4/1 morning line, making this horse the third leg of a logical top-three grouping according to our model. Trainer Shane Ladner teams with Ubaldo Luna, who has multiple mounts on the card tonight. At 300 yards, this is essentially a reaction-time race, and Fly My Freight's numbers suggest she belongs in the conversation for exotics.
Our three free races set the table nicely for the afternoon. Race 3 stands out as the sharpest free play on the card — Rogue Effort carries an 87.81 TrackWiz rating and comes in as a 5/2 morning-line shot over the ultra-short 300-yard dash, which leaves almost no margin for error. When the gate opens, this race is essentially over in a blink, so getting on the right horse out of the box matters more than almost anywhere else on the card.
Blue Castle in Race 2 draws the eye as well — an Allowance entry at 870 yards, the longest race of the entire card, so pace scenario shifts considerably. That rating of 85.62 at 4/1 on the morning line suggests there may be some value there. And in Race 1, Ancient Bolt of Fire opens things up in a Maiden Claiming sprint at 350 yards — a solid 83.35 rating at 5/1 is worth a look for bettors hunting a price early in the card.
