Churchill Downs Picks & Predictions — June 5, 2026

9 racesChurchill Downs

It's a Friday afternoon at the historic Churchill Downs oval, and conditions couldn't be much more cooperative. Partly cloudy skies and a comfortable 81°F means the track crew won't be fighting rain, and with two turf races on the card, that firm grass should be playing fast — exactly the kind of surface that rewards speed figures built on clean, dry ground.

Nine races are on the board today, stretching from a quick 5-furlong maiden sprint all the way out to a pair of 1 1/16-mile turf routes. We've got maiden claimers, open claimers, allowance optional claiming, and a starter allowance mixed in — a genuine cross-section of the Churchill condition book. Whether you're here to grind the full card or just dip in for a few strategic plays, there's plenty to work with.

Our TrackWiz ratings span a wide range today — from a modest 58.67 in Race 5 (a wide-open maiden claimer that screams proceed with caution) all the way up to an 89.71 for Race 3's top selection. That spread tells you something important: not every race deserves the same confidence level, and we'll flag where the edges are sharpest.

Best Bets

Race 1

Maiden Claiming · 1 mi · Dirt

A maiden claiming mile on the dirt where TrackWiz ratings tell a clear story — one horse grades out well above the rest, but at morning-line chalk prices there's a legitimate value alternative lurking right behind her.

win3Watershed MomentML 5/2

Watershed Moment tops our ratings at 87.81 — a full 11 points clear of the next-best horse in this field — and trainer Richard Baltas has a strong reputation for bringing first-time starters ready to fire. At 5/2 on the morning line, she's not a steal, but the rating advantage in a maiden field this thin is hard to dismiss. Rafael Bejarano climbs aboard and gives the connections an experienced hand around two turns. This is our top selection for good reason.

place5Authentic BeautyML 4/1

Authentic Beauty (76.38 TrackWiz rating) is the second-best-rated horse in the field and comes in at 4/1 on the morning line — that's a fair number for a horse who profiles as a serious place threat. Trainer Kinnon LaRose teams up with Brian Joseph Hernandez, Jr., one of the leading riders at Churchill Downs, which is a pairing worth noting. If Watershed Moment has any issue breaking cleanly, Authentic Beauty is the most likely beneficiary.

show2Lost ChordML 2/1

Lost Chord is the morning-line favorite at 2/1 despite rating third in our model at 69.35, which creates a mismatch worth paying attention to. Trainer Ian R. Wilkes is a Churchill stalwart who knows how to place horses, and Julien Leparoux is a seasoned hand. The 2/1 price makes her a thin value in win exotics, but she's a solid show safety valve in trifectas.

Race 2

Claiming · 6 1/2 fur · Dirt

Three horses cluster tightly at the top of the TrackWiz ratings in this dirt sprint, setting up a contentious pace scenario where the morning-line favorite may not be the best value — and the 9/2 shot looks like the play.

win6R HeismanML 9/2

R Heisman tops the TrackWiz leaderboard at 84.90 and breaks from post 6 under Francisco Arrieta, who has been solid in sprints at this meet. Trainer Peter Miller is one of the sharpest claiming conditioners in the country, and his horses tend to be fit and ready when they hit the gate. An average speed figure of 56 ties for best in the field, and at 9/2 on the morning line, this is legitimate value against a 2/1 morning-line false favorite.

place7SummonyourcourageML 2/1

Summonyourcourage comes in right behind R Heisman at a 84.35 rating and is the 2/1 morning-line choice — reflecting public respect earned over time. Trainer Joe Sharp saddles this one (he also has Banned for Life), and the 8% career win rate is modest, but the horse has shown enough consistency to warrant a place spot. Tyler Gaffalione is the leading jockey in this meet and knows how to position a horse from post 7 in a sprint.

show3Banned for LifeML 3/1

Banned for Life is the third member of that top-rated cluster at 82.89 and comes in at 3/1 on the morning line. Gabriel Saez gets the call for trainer Joe Sharp, who double-barrels in this race — that's a trainer who likes his chances. The 56 average speed figure matches R Heisman for best in the field, and the 13% career win rate is respectable for this level.

Race 3

Claiming · 1 1/16 mi · Dirt

This one mile and a sixteenth claiming route on the dirt has a dominant top choice, but the price on the morning-line favorite is so short it makes the exotic plays around him the real opportunity — especially with a pair of intriguing outsiders lurking.

win3TisumML 6/5

Tisum is a hammer at 6/5 on the morning line, and the 89.71 TrackWiz rating justifies the favoritism — that's the highest score on today's card so far and a 25-point gap over the next-rated horse. Trainer Carlos Munoz gets Jaime A. Torres in the saddle, and the 12% career win rate in context of this competition level tells you this horse competes consistently. At a mile and a sixteenth on the dirt, an average speed figure of 53 keeps pace with the top of the field.

place6JinxziML 6/1

Jinxzi is a solid value play at 6/1 on the morning line with a 64.38 TrackWiz rating, ranking second in this field — and trainer Ian R. Wilkes is exceptional at placing horses to win or hit the board at Churchill. Victor R. Carrasco has been riding well, and the 14% career win rate is respectable for this class level. At 6/1, Jinxzi is a legitimate exotics inclusion as a place horse who could easily outrun that price.

show1Don't Fire JoeML 12/1

Don't Fire Joe is the longshot show selection at 12/1, but his 33% career win rate is the highest in the field and demands attention. Trainer Denis W. Roberson has him at a price the public isn't respecting, and at 1 1/16 miles on the dirt, the distance should suit a horse that has shown the ability to win. At 12/1, including him on the underside of trifectas is smart ticket construction — he can absolutely hit the board at this price.

The first three races give us a solid foundation to build on. Watershed Moment opens the card in a one-mile maiden claimer off the dirt, drawing our top rating among the free races at 87.81 — a meaningful number for this level. The mile trip on a dry Churchill strip should set up a clean pace scenario that rewards stamina, and Watershed Moment profiles as exactly that kind of horse. In Race 2, R Heisman takes on an open claiming field sprinting 6½ furlongs — a distance where early pace control matters enormously, and our analysis likes how this one projects to sit in a comfortable stalking position. Then Race 3 brings our highest-rated free selection of the day: Tisum at 6/5 on the morning line with an 89.71 TrackWiz rating. Morning-line favorites at that price don't always offer value, but a rating that strong suggests the market may actually be right here.

One thread connecting these early dirt races: Churchill's main track has been playing fair to speed under these dry, warm conditions. Horses that can secure position early without burning themselves up in the first quarter should have an advantage through the stretch. Keep that pace angle in mind as you watch the first few races — it'll inform how you attack the rest of the card.

Bottom line: Tisum is the strongest standalone play on the free portion of today's card, Watershed Moment is a solid opener worth backing, and Zeus's Echo at 6/1 is the kind of value angle that makes the full card worth digging into. The turf is playing fast, the dirt has been rewarding pace-setters and stalkers alike, and there's real money to be made if you attack the right spots.
