Churchill Downs Picks & Predictions — May 28, 2026
Happy Thursday at Churchill Downs. Eight races are on the board today under a partly cloudy sky with temps sitting at a comfortable 82°F — good conditions all around, and with the turf getting action in Races 4 and 7, the ground game matters as much as the speed figures today.
The card mixes maiden sprints with a pair of Allowance Optional Claiming tests and a couple of Starter Allowances, giving us a nice range of puzzle types. There's maiden money to be made early, a genuine value angle we like late, and a mile-and-an-eighth Starter Allowance in Race 5 that shapes up as one of the more compelling pace scenarios on the day.
Three races are fully free — no subscription needed — and five more are waiting in the premium breakdown. Let's get into it.
Best Bets
Race 1
Maiden Special Weight · 5 fur · Dirt
A maiden sprint with zero prior race experience across the field, so trainer and jockey firepower become the primary handicapping factors — and the top of the market is loaded with elite connections.
La Belle Vie draws the top TrackWiz rating in this field at 59.0 and carries the morning-line favoritism at 8/5, which tells you the sharp money is already pointed her way. Wesley Ward is one of the premier trainers in the country for debuting juveniles in sprint situations, and this 5-furlong distance is precisely his wheelhouse. Gerardo Corrales gets the call, and with Ward's barn behind a horse this well-regarded, we're comfortable making La Belle Vie our win selection despite the short price.
Vissino is the second-highest-rated horse in the field at 57.5 and draws the rail with Jose L. Ortiz in the irons — one of the best debut riders in the game. Mark Casse conditions this horse, and Casse has a strong record putting first-time starters on the board. At 5/2 on the morning line, there's not a lot of value at win, but Vissino makes plenty of sense in exacta and place tickets underneath La Belle Vie.
Big Falls carries a 55.83 TrackWiz rating and offers some appeal at 7/2 as a third betting option in a race that could sort out in multiple ways. Trainer William Walden sends this horse out with Axel Concepcion up, and the program number two post gives Big Falls a clean stalking position in a five-furlong dash. As a show play or in trifecta coverage, Big Falls rounds out the top three nicely.
Race 2
Starter Allowance · 6 1/2 fur · Dirt
Social Hour is a standout on paper, but Gamblers Tail and Timing Difference both carry respectable figures and career win percentages that could make this more competitive than the morning line suggests.
Social Hour is a class apart in this field with a TrackWiz rating of 89.42 — more than 11 points clear of the next rival. Jose L. Ortiz takes the mount, and pairing arguably the country's top jockey with the top-rated horse in a starter allowance is as strong a play as you'll see at this level. A 19% career win rate is modest but steady, and the 54 average speed figure is consistent with the pace likely on offer at 6.5 furlongs on the Churchill dirt.
Gamblers Tail sports a 78.37 rating and a 20% career win percentage — solid for this company — and draws Irad Ortiz Jr., who rarely pilots a horse without intent. Trainer John Alexander Ortiz conditions this horse, and the 5/2 morning line suggests the public already respects the threat. Gamblers Tail figures to be right there at the top of the stretch.
Timing Difference (75.73 rating, 20% career win rate) is another live contender at 7/2 with Brian Joseph Hernandez Jr. in the saddle — a proven big-meet rider at Churchill. At 54 average speed, this horse matches up evenly on pure numbers with several rivals, and Chris Hartman is a competent conditioner who sends horses ready to run. Round out your exotics here.
Race 3
Maiden Special Weight · 5 1/2 fur · Dirt
Another first-time starter maiden, this one going 5.5 furlongs, with a deeper, eight-horse field and three trainers represented who know how to win with debut horses — making the top of the market legitimately competitive.
Ez Miss Sassy tops the TrackWiz ratings in this race at 57.5 and draws the four-hole with Irad Ortiz Jr. aboard — a pairing that immediately elevates any maiden's chances. Mark Casse conditions this filly, and Casse has long been one of the more reliable trainers in North America for winning with first-time starters. The 5/2 morning line reflects the public's confidence, and our analysis agrees: Ez Miss Sassy is the horse to beat.
Exile sits second in our ratings at 55.83 and represents the same Casse barn as Ez Miss Sassy, which means both horses are likely to arrive fit and ready. Tyler Gaffalione has been one of the most in-form jockeys on the circuit and can coax a first-effort performance out of a maiden. If the Casse stable splits the tote, Exile could easily steal exacta spots at a better price.
Peak Perspective at 9/2 carries a 54.17 rating and gives trainer Ben Colebrook a sneaky chance at a piece. Luan Machado rides, and while this isn't the most glamorous connections pairing in the field, the rating differential between Peak Perspective and several rivals below the top tier is meaningful. A show ticket here has value, especially in a race where the Casse pair could drag each other wide.
Our three free races cover the early sprints and give you a solid foundation for the day. La Belle Vie tops the opener, a 5-furlong maiden on the main track where first-time speed and clean trips tend to dictate the outcome. In Race 2, Social Hour comes in as the morning-line choice at 7/5 in the Starter Allowance — the rating backs that confidence. And in Race 3, Ez Miss Sassy at 5/2 is the kind of price that makes sense in a maiden sprint where the favorite rarely runs away with it.
The common thread across these free picks: all three are contenders on a track where pace early tends to reward. Keep an eye on how the dirt plays in Race 1 — if front-runners are winning easily, that's a bias worth carrying into your premium races too.
