Evangeline Picks & Predictions — May 21, 2026

8 racesEvangeline

It's a wet one at Evangeline Downs today. Rain is falling and temps are sitting at 79°F, which means that Louisiana dirt is going to be playing deep and cuppy — or maybe lightning fast depending on drainage. Either way, track condition is going to be the story of the afternoon, and handicappers who ignore it do so at their own peril.

We've got a full 8-race card on tap, mixing maiden special weights, claiming races, and an allowance optional claimer that figures to draw some of the better horses on the grounds. Three of those races are fully free in today's TrackWiz preview — including the opener where Von Erich catches our eye at a very playable 2/1 morning line.

The turf race in Race 4 is one to watch closely. With rain in the picture, track officials may switch that mile on the turf to the main track, which would completely scramble the form. We'll be monitoring and updating as conditions develop.

Best Bets

Race 1

Maiden Special Weight · 1 mi · Dirt

A wide-open maiden special weight mile on dirt with zero career wins in the field — but TrackWiz ratings reveal a clear two-horse class edge at the top, with the rest of the pack fighting for scraps.

win2Von ErichML 2/1

Von Erich towers over this field with an 88.54 TrackWiz rating — the highest in the race by more than two points — and posts the best average speed figure at 53. The morning line has him at 2/1, which is honestly fair given the gap between him and the rest. Jansen Melancon climbs aboard from the two-hole, a clean gate position for a horse that figures to be forwardly placed in a maiden mile. In a field of first-time or lightly raced horses, that kind of rating dominance usually matters.

place4Tears for TheeML 3/1

Tears for Thee checks in with an 86.0 rating — second-best in the field — and draws the four post with Julio Ramirez, Jr. in the irons. The 3/1 morning line reflects public respect, and rightly so. The concern is a modest average speed of 51, but in a maiden field where everyone is still learning, raw ability as reflected by the rating is the better guide.

show6Lil CentralML 4/1

Lil Central lands at 68.28 on the TrackWiz scale, third-best in this field, and the 4/1 morning line makes the six horse a legitimate exotic play. Timothy Thornton has the call for trainer Sam B. David, Jr., a barn that shows up regularly on this card. At a mile on dirt in a wide-open maiden race, this is exactly the kind of horse that sneaks into the trifecta at a price.

Race 2

Claiming · 7 fur · Dirt

A deep claiming sprint at seven furlongs where the top two TrackWiz-rated horses are separated by less than a point, setting up a potential pace duel — and a big overlay lurking near the top of the field.

win6Donegal MoonshineML 3/1

Donegal Moonshine brings the best combination of class and consistency in this field — a 74.62 rating and a 23% career win percentage, the highest in the race. He's drawn the six post with Jamison Mudd, and his average speed of 55 ties for best in the field. At 3/1 on the morning line, he's not a steal, but the win rate backs up the price — nearly one in four career starts results in a win.

place8ScallywagML 12/1

Scallywag is the overlay angle here. A 73.96 TrackWiz rating — nearly identical to the top pick — but the morning line has him at 12/1. That gap is hard to ignore. He's drawn the eight post with Carlos Perez, and while his 11% career win rate is modest, the raw ability number says he's been underestimated. Horses with ratings this close to the top pick routinely hit the board.

show3DuveeML 9/2

Duvee rates out at 65.51 and lands in the three hole with Timothy Thornton up for trainer Sam B. David, Jr. The 9/2 morning line is fair for a horse whose rating puts him solidly in the third tier of this field. His average speed of 50 isn't flashy, but in a claiming sprint, tactical positioning and late kick can compensate — and Thornton knows how to place horses in contention.

Race 3

Maiden Claiming · 6 fur · Dirt

Two horses have separated themselves from the rest in this maiden claiming sprint, with Chicanery and El Maximo posting ratings well above the competition — it's essentially a two-horse race with a few wild cards.

win6ChicaneryML 5/2

Chicanery is the standout here with an 87.81 TrackWiz rating, the best in the field, and an average speed of 55 — tops in this race. C.J. McMahon picks up the mount for the Bret Calhoun barn, and that's a meaningful connection at this level. The 5/2 morning line is the shortest in the field, which tells you the market agrees. In a short maiden claiming sprint where speed figure edges get amplified, Chicanery looks like the right horse.

place2El MaximoML 3/1

El Maximo comes in at 84.28 — only three and a half points behind the top pick — and Carlos Perez takes the ride from the two post. The 3/1 morning line suggests real public support, and an average speed of 54 is right in range for this distance. Trainer Yovani Munoz sends him out in good position, and if Chicanery meets any trouble breaking from the six, El Maximo is right there to capitalize.

show1ArchtopML 4/1

Archtop checks in at a 55.0 rating for trainer Sam B. David, Jr. — a barn that appears four times on this card, showing active inventory. No average speed figure is available, which adds some uncertainty, but the 4/1 morning line and the David barn's volume suggest this horse has been working toward a race. In a maiden claiming field where the top two get most of the action, Archtop offers trifecta value at a manageable price.

Our three free races today — the Race 1 maiden special weight, Race 2 claiming sprint, and Race 3 maiden claimer — give you a solid cross-section of the card. Von Erich (88.54 TrackWiz rating) headlines the bunch and figures to be a key player if the sealed track plays to pace-pressers, which our analysis suggests it will early in the card. Chicanery in Race 3 carries an 87.81 rating and is another horse we like at fair value odds, while Donegal Moonshine in Race 2 draws our attention as a 3/1 morning line shot in a wide-open claiming field.

One overarching angle to keep in mind across all three free races: wet-track maidens are notoriously unpredictable, but horses with any prior off-track experience carry a meaningful edge when the conditions are this sloppy. Watch the board movement in the first few races — it'll tell you a lot about where the sharp money is landing and how the surface is actually playing.
